A Complex Journey

Some projects take longer than others: t(h)ree (below: 5" w x 13.25" h x 1" d) started life as a quote by Arthur Schopenhauer that I found last summer, and then developed a life of its own.

There are three nested square flexagons, inkjet-printed on Canson Mi-Tientes paper and attached with PVA glue, and each sits in an envelope made from paste paper I created in a class with Susan Kristoferson. An enclosure/sculpture of knitted mohair, alpaca, and wool brings them all together.

I have also been working to develop a line of knitted scarves and hope to have some pictures of them up soon.

What is "Lasqueti"?

One of the smallest of the Gulf Islands, and located between mainland British Columbia and Vancouver Island 50 mi/80 km WNW of Vancouver, Lasqueti Island was named in 1791 after Juan Maria Lasqueti, an officer on one of the early Spanish sailing ships that brought Europeans to the west coast of Canada.

Pronounced las-KE-tee, it proudly remains one of the least developed locales in Canada. A place of incomparable beauty with minimal services, it can only be reached by private boat or passengers-only ferry sailings from Vancouver Island.

Although it is almost exactly the same size in area as Manhattan, the population of approximately 400 persons uses primarily solar and wind power to generate electricity, and the few portable generators are turned off at night.

Arrangements must be made in advance for visitors wishing to stay overnight, as accommodations are limited. (Having stayed there, it helps to have a friend with a place: that being said, the hotel looks nice, and there's a pub too.)

I don't live there, but part --much, even -- of me wishes I did, although having stayed there, I realize I don't have the Ms. Fix-it skills that I'd want to. That being said, I can hardly wait until the next time I can go back there.
